Summara Health was born from a season of fear, confusion, and isolation.
In 2020, I spent a significant amount of time in the hospital. It was during the height of COVID, when hospitals were overwhelmed and visitors were not allowed inside. I went through several surgeries, often heavily medicated, exhausted, and alone.
Doctors would come into my room and explain what was happening, what they had found, what procedure was next, or what I needed to do after I went home. I know those conversations were important. I also know that, much of the time, I had no idea what they had just told me.
I was trying to listen, but I was in pain. I was medicated. I was scared. I was focused on surviving the moment in front of me.
There was no family member beside me to take notes, ask questions, or help me make sense of it all afterward.
That experience became the beginning of Summara Health.
As I lay there, I started thinking about my mom sitting in hospital rooms with my brother during his battle with leukemia. I thought about my aunt and uncle walking through that same devastating diagnosis with their young daughter. I thought about my grandparents caring for my father during his fight with cancer.
I thought about the countless conversations they had with doctors, nurses, specialists, and medical staff.
Conversations held after sleepless nights.
Conversations filled with unfamiliar words, difficult decisions, and overwhelming fear.
Conversations they were expected to remember while exhausted, emotional, and doing everything in their power to care for someone they loved.
Summara Health is for them.
It is for every patient who has ever left an appointment unsure of what the doctor actually said.
It is for every husband who walks through the front door and hears his wife ask, "How did it go?"—only to answer, "It went great," because he was thinking about work, the kids, the diagnosis, the next appointment, or anything other than the details of the conversation.
